Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease characterized by patches of abnormal scaly skin. These patches are typically red, dry and itchy. Most people find them irritating and they can be a cosmetic concern.
With normal skin, your body takes about 30 days to produce new skin cells and shed the old skin cells. With psoriasis, your immune system is overactive, triggering skin inflammation. This causes skin cells to be produced faster than normal and the new skin cells are pushed to the skin’s surface in 3-4 days instead of 30. Your body can not shed the new skin cells at the same are and the old, dead skin cells pile up on top of each other. This process forms thick, red, itchy patches.
There are a number of treatments for psoriasis, including topical creams, light therapy or treatment with tablets. If you suffer from psoriasis make an appointment for a consult with one of our doctors for a tailored treatment plan.
