Redness/Broken Capillaries

What are Redness/Broken Capillaries?

Broken blood vessels and capillaries create red patches that leave our skin looking uneven and unhealthy. Skin can also become extremely sensitive and is can be easily irritated by simple products such as sunscreens.

Whether you feel self-conscious about the redness and broken capillaries on your face and body or you wish to relieve the discomfort it causes, you can speak to our skin specialists for effective and valuable options for treatment.

What are Broken Blood Vessels?

Broken blood vessels or facial capillaries are also known as Telangiectasia. It tends to affect people with fair complexions creating red lines or blotchiness across the skin.

Not all red patches or blotches are caused by broken capillaries. When the broken blood vessels in your face become enlarged, they can resemble a spider web (spider veins) or thin branches that spread out. Although linked to Rosacea, broken capillaries differ from general inflammation. Therefore, it is best to consult with one of our experienced skin specialists to help you find a safe treatment to eliminate your symptoms and even your skin tone.

Can Broken Capillaries be Cured?

Yes. Unfortunately, there are no creams that one can apply to get rid of broken capillaries. The only way to eliminate the redness and unevenness caused by broken blood vessels is to have it treated with targeted laser therapy.

What Causes Damaged Blood Vessels?

The following factors can contribute to broken capillaries on the face and the body:

Broken capillaries usually occur in mature and fair-skinned men and women. As we age, our skin loses collagen and elasticity, compromising its ability to regenerate and maintain an even youthful appearance. In addition, the surrounding capillaries become weak and damaged, which leads to broken blood vessels and capillaries.

Rosacea is a skin condition that has been linked to broken capillaries and it also involves flushing and skin inflammation

No matter the cause for spider veins and redness, you can schedule a professional consultation with one of our dedicated skin specialists for an assessment and a treatment plan if you are concerned about it.

How Can I Improve the Appearance of Broken Capillaries?

If you are bothered by redness and visible capillaries on your face, there are treatments you can apply to reduce its intensity or appearance. Anti-inflammatory medication, retinoid ointments, and various home remedies can be safely applied to the skin, but it is not a permanent solution. Laser therapy is the only way to get rid of broken capillaries for good.

How do we treat broken capillaries?

Broken capillaries and redness can be treated with two different laser modalities. At Bayside Cosmetic Medicine Clinic, we use a 1064nm laser beam to treat underlying redness that is caused by vasculature in the papillary dermal layer. In addition, a 532nm laser beam is applied to visible blood vessels.

Patients will differ in terms of their comfort depending on the severity of the capillary damage and the length of treatment. Our laser therapy will create mild sensations similar to IPL; however, clients who have received IPL and the 532nm laser claim that the laser provides the least discomfort. Our specialists may recommend a treatment course for the underlying redness and the blood vessels that are visible across the skin.

For faster recovery, we incorporate vitamin B in the treatment of redness and advise our clients against harsh ingredients including the use of retinol and glycolic acid.
