What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that affects the face.

Rosacea symptoms include:

  • Flushing
  • Redness
  • Pimples
  • Swelling
  • Small superficial dilated blood vessels

Often the nose, cheeks, forehead, eyes and chin are most involved. It is common in those with fair skin, blue eyes and Celtic origin.

What is the main cause of rosacea?

The cause of rosacea is unknown.

Doctors believe that some of the causes of rosacea might be:

  • Hot drinks
  • Spicy food
  • Too much sun exposure
  • Alcohol
  • Too many emotions
  • Too much exercise
  • Too many makeup products/skin-care products

The skin’s immune response appears to be important as high concentrations of antimicrobial peptides are present in rosacea.

How do I know if I have rosacea?

You might have Rosacea if you have some of the symptoms of rosacea:

  • Constant redness that comes and goes
  • Visible blood vessels on the surface of your cheeks
  • Pink or red bumps on or around your cheeks
  • Dry skin
  • Yellowish patches of skin
  • Swelling

Factors that can worsen the condition include heat, exercise, sunlight, cold, spicy food, alcohol, menopause, stress or steroid cream. The best way to check if you have rosacea is to book a consultation with your dermatologist.

Rosacea treatment Procedure

While not curable, treatment usually improves symptoms significantly.

Treatment options include:

  • Topical creams
  • Oral anti-inflammatory antibiotics
  • Laser treatments
  • LED light treatments.

Because it is still unknown what causes rosacea to appear, the best thing you can do is carefully observe your skin and keep an eye on what triggers the rosacea.

If it turns out that you do have rosacea, avoid the triggers and try to do the following to improve your treatment:

  • Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30
  • Cover your face in cold weather
  • Use gentle skin-care products
