Self-Examination

What is Self- Examination?

A self examination of your skin is one of the easiest ways to help you identify abnormalities before they become a health concern. At Bayside Cosmetic Medicine Clinic, we make it easier to stay on top of healthy skin with our simple tips for a self-check.

We recommend performing a head-to-toe self-check at least once a month. This will help you spot any changes quickly. Because common types of skin cancer can be treated when detected early, you can take the steps today to ultimately save your life.

What You Should Look for During a Self-Check

Skin cancer can present in many forms. This includes the appearance of a new mole, itchy spots or scabs that bleed, and wounds that fail to heal within 3 weeks. When you know the warning signs and what to look for, it can help you take the necessary steps to protect your well-being.

By performing a self-check, you can get unusual spots or marks checked out by a clinician immediately.

How to Perform a Skin Exam

1. Start by Examining Your Face

Especially your nose, lips, ears and mouth. Open your mouth to check the inside of your cheeks and under your tongue. It is always easier to use two mirrors to perform the assessment, especially when you examine the back of your ears.

2. Inspect Your Scalp

Run your fingers along the top of your scalp and feel for any bumps or rough patches. You can ask a friend or family member to help you but if you’re alone, part your hair with a hairdryer to expose your scalp and use a mirror.

3. Assess Your Hands

Look at the back of your hands, between your fingers, your palms, and your nails. This stage of your self-check should include an examination of your wrists and your forearms.

4. Inspect Your Arms

You may need a full-length mirror for this part! Start with your elbows, the back of your arms, your shoulders, and then your underarms. The underarm area is prone to skin tags and small spots, so don't forget to inspect these.

5. Examine Your Neck to Your Abdomen

By looking in the mirror, you can easily spot skin changes across your neck, chest, and abdomen. For women, don't forget to lift your decolletage to ensure there aren't any spots or lesions.

6. Check Your Entire Back

This can be challenging on your own, but with a full-length mirror and a hand mirror, you can view most areas from the back of your neck and shoulders to your waist.

7. Next, Examine the Lower Back and Buttocks

Still using both mirrors, examine from your waist to the back of your legs. This entire area must be examined in the correct lighting. Dim rooms make it challenging to see those 'hard-to-reach areas.

8. Lastly, Look at Your Legs

This is the trickiest part of your examination. You can either use two chairs, or you can sit on the edge of your bed with a stool. Raise each leg so you can easily examine the inside of your thigh all the way down to your shins. A hand mirror will make it simpler to assess the genital area. Next, you should move down to your feet and soles and inspect between the toes and the nails (without any nail polish).
