Skin Cancer Checks

Living in beautiful Australia certainly has its perks. But just like anything in life, there is a downside. Because many Aussies like to enjoy their free time outdoors, they are extremely susceptible to the sun’s damaging rays.

It’s a sad fact that two out of three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer before they reach the age of 70—including our own Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, who has recently been treated for skin cancer on his face for the third time this year alone.

While it’s important to actively apply sunscreen and wear hates while outdoors, these measures aren’t always enough to prevent you from getting skin cancer.

At Bayside Cosmetic Medicine Clinic, we encourage you to come in for an annual skin cancer check at our Skin Spot Clinic.

The Examination

A skin check is a non-invasive way for our doctors to examine your skin. When you arrive for your appointment, you will be taken to a private consulting room where you can strip down to your undergarments. Because lesions can often appear in inconspicuous areas, we ask that you expose as much skin as possible to ensure a proper examination from head to toe.

Each of our general practitioners—Dr Gertrude Behan, Dr Spencer Behan and Dr Mia Didovic—are experienced in working with a variety of skin types, and will help you feel at ease during your yearly exam.

In addition to the full body examination, your doctor will take the time to explain proper skin care techniques and suggest ways to improve sun-damaged areas of your skin. After checking for and identifying any suspicious pigmented lesions, we will discuss any further assessment or necessary treatment.

The Skin Spot Clinic offers services and treatments to meet your individual needs, including:

If we find a suspicous -looking spot or lesion during your skin check, we may arrange for you to have a skin excision. This appointment generally only takes about 20 minutes and can be performed right in one of our treatment rooms.

This procedure will consist of your doctor excising the spot and its surrounding tissue. Depending on what the lesion looks like, we may choose to remove either part of it or the entire thing. The removed skin will then be sent to pathology to check for cancerous cells. You can expect your results in as little as a few days to a week.

Photodynamic Therapy

If too much time in the amazing Australian sun has produced actinic keratoses and made your skin look more aged than it really is, consider photodynamic therapy. Also referred to as PDT, this therapy offers a revolutionary way to treat sun-damaged and blemished areas of the skin, as well as kill pre cancer cells!

Special drugs called photosensitizing agents will be placed onto your problem skin. Over a short period of time, the drug is then absorbed by the cancer cells and your doctor will use a non-invasive light technology to treat your unique skin condition.

PDT is a quick and relatively painless way to reduce precancer cells and can be repeated multiple times at the same site if necessary. With minimal side effects and minimal downtime required, this is a great alternative to multiple invasive excisions.

Picato Treatment Management

During an examination at our Skin Spot Clinic, your skin is thoroughly checked not just for cancer but also any conditions or abnormalities. One common skin condition is called solar keratosis (sun spots);this condition precedes squamous cell cancer.

Thankfully, sun spots can be effectively treated with a picato application at BCMC. Our doctors will apply the picato cream directly to your problem area and monitor the progress of your skin during follow-up visits.

We surveyed our patients to gauge their response to being treated with picato and found that 100 percent of respondents rated their response as either effective or very effective.
